A NOTE OF SPECIAL INTEREST TO OUR READERS

Over the years, our Watchdog Report on Animal Protection Charities has guided many readers on how to distribute their animal support dollars.

The 1998 Watchdog Report on Animal Protection Charities, issued as a supplemental publication to assist animal protection donors, restates the financial data pertaining to 40 leading animal-related charities as originally published in our December 1997 eighth annual "Who gets the money?" feature, and adds succinct factual summaries of the program activities of each organization, any controversies associated with program activities, any controversies associated with organization policies, and any controversies pertaining to how the organization is run. Major programs: Publishes ANIMAL PEOPLE newspaper, maintains largest online information archives in animal protection field.

Program issues: Provides complimentary subscription to every animal shelter/sanctuary and humane society in the world (more than 5,900 total). Also provides complimentary subscriptions to media, legislators, schools and libraries on request.

Policy issues: Emphasis on accountability and public debate of policy issues alienates established organizations, who withold ads and grant support.

Administrative issues: Takes on mission much greater than fiscal base warrants--but has stayed alive and on schedule.

Vegan Society [ IVS ],
a small start up group of vegans and supporters

educate mainly young people in Indonesia about the
vegan diet and
lifetstyle.

Despite a number of difficulties we had to overcome,
the harsh taxation
of donated magazines from fund.org being one, we are
slowly but successfully
raising public awareness.

IVS is an unfunded not-for-profit volunteer
organisation with no paid
members. All expenses are met by individual members.

Vegan Media Campaign 2001 Appeal Letter

Dear Vegans,

I am writing you as a volunteer of The Indonesian
Vegan Society [ IVS ].

The IVS is badly need of vegan magazines, artwork
and other educative and
campaigning materials such as leaflets, badges and
posters. We are
especially grateful for those with useful
illustrations or haunting
pictures, suitable for both adults and young people.

We gladly receive used as well as new books- used ones
are better since the post office services are very
unreliable,
magazines and other media.
Please note the following message about problems we
have been having with
undue taxation of gifts if you intend to send
anything*.

These items are distributed to schools and libraries
in Indonesia and
used at public events. We are grateful to have
received support in the
past from fund.org and PETA, animalpeoplenews.org,
farmusa.org,
veganopoly.com, veggiedate.com, hermanthrust.com, veg.on.ca, viva.org.uk, vegnews.com, panna.org, dkd.net/vegan (Vegan Voice- Australia), swampcircus.com, VAN UK, and
many others and
welcome multiple copies or duplicates.

We hope to list our sponsors-unless told not to- on
the IVS site when our volunteer webmaster finally has
finished his other works.

If you wish to sent a gift of any new(used ones
preferred) or old vegan
books and magazine,
please do personalise them. We would like to
encourage you to write
something about yourself and anything you would like
to share or receive
from us here in Indonesia.

These are kept in our library and passed on or given
to schools, groups
and individuals. By doing to it allows people can
always see that caring
vegans are everywhere and that those attempting to
walk this path are not
alone.

In our experience we have found that this encourages
individuals to move
towards veganism and shares with them the
inspirations that encouraged
you. Whether that was about saving life, saving the
planet or for young
people about "being cool", every message is welcome.

All the donations should be free from any taxes,
especially VAT but
unfortunately this is not always adhered to. In the
past taxes have
reached as much as 58,000 IDR [ approx 6 US $ ] or a
quarter of the minimum wage (the goverment standard)
in Indonesia for a packet from fund.org and then
almost the same amount for PETA 26 magazines.
Good News: Veganopoly.com sent 2 very big packages
with the "No Tax" sign (15 kgs or more) and we only
had to pay 14,000 IDR

My name is Vanda.
I am writing you as a volunteer of the IVS, The
Indonesian

bad need of vegan
magazines, especially those with 'haunting' pictures,
to be shown to
people
and children,.... However, we'll gladly received any
used vegan books
and magazines. We'll distribute them to scholls and
libraries in

Since, I've been paying VAT and another tax ,I don't
know and failed to find out how did they count the
taxes. All the packets should have been freed
from any taxes, moreover, the VAT ones. The taxes
reached as much as Rp 57.495 (around 8, 00 US$) which
is more than a quarter of the 'minimum wage' in
Indonesia. It was imposed on the 26 mags we received
from PETA.

If there's anything to be sent here, please
'personalise' the mags, please write something about
yourself or anything you would like to share/ get
from us here in Indonesia in each mags/ books/
materials you send us, so, when i keep them in the
'library' and pass them on or give them to school,
people can always see, that caring vegans are
everywhere, what do you think, :)? That they are not
alone, so that they can move towards veganism easier
and with the thoughts that, 'oh, it turns out that
it's not weird, IT'S COOL/ Saving lives, the
earth,..., ;).
